On Tuesday, Huntington announced that President Sherilyn Emberton will retire at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.
Emberton has led Huntington for the past 12 years. Her upcoming retirement marks an end of a 23-year career of higher education at Christian schools.
“The Church of the United Brethren in Christ is grateful for Dr. Emberton’s leadership at Huntington University,” Rev. Todd Fetters, bishop of the U.S. National Conference, said in a release. “She has led our denominational college through continual growth and innovation, making it stronger than ever. I admire the way she has led with vision, collaboration, humility and a deep faith.”
Huntington is a private university southwest of Fort Wayne that is affiliated in the United Brethren of Christ. It was founded in 1897 and has an enrollment of approximately 1,400 students.
In the same release, Emberton said she was thankful for her time at the university.
“Serving with the faculty, staff and Board of Trustees at Huntington University has been the highlight of my professional career,” Emberton wrote. “I have loved being part of the United Brethren denomination, community of Huntington, Northeast Indiana and the wonderful independent colleges and universities of Indiana.”
During Emberton’s tenure, Huntington grew by 34% in its enrollment. Its endowment grew by 35%, the university said.
Huntington said it will undergo a national search for a new president.
