The Indiana Department of Transportation says it is investing about $150 million to make the Lloyd Expressway more efficient and safer for drivers to navigate.
The Lloyd4U project extends along a 14-mile stretch from I-69 on the ease side of Evansville west to Posey County Line Road. INDOT says the effort will include intersection improvements, bridge replacements and pavement replacement.
Large electronic signs have been installed to alert drivers of tree clearing along western portions of the expressway, also known as the Lloyd.
The clearing, which is slated for completion by the end of March, is being done now as part of an environmental commitment by INDOT to limit the impact on the native Indiana Bat species, which are typically still in caves at this time of year. Bats typically roost, forage and travel in wooded habitats during the summer, the department said.
Construction on the Lloyd4U project is slated to begin in late March or early April at the intersections of Stockwell Road and Vann Avenue.
Part of the project will include creating reduced conflict intersections at Schutte Road, Middle Mt. Vernon Road, Felstead Road and McDowell. The intersection design, INDOT said, shifts left turns away from the intersection, eliminating dangerous right-angle turns that cause the most serious crashes.
INDOT says work will begin from the western part of the Lloyd later in 2024. Construction will continue in phases until 2028. You can learn more about the project by clicking here.
