The tech networking platform will host the 2019 Indiana Breakout Tech Cultures Awards in September. The 50 finalists, announced last night at an event attended by more than 500 people, were selected based on data from the 2019 Tech Census, which launched earlier this year with a specific focus on culture.
In an interview with Inside INdiana Business Reporter Mary-Rachel Redman, Powderkeg Chief Executive Officer Matt Hunckler said a number of criteria was considered in selecting the finalists.
"We looked at growth metrics. We looked at employee count," said Hunckler. "But you start to get to some of the softer skill things like leadership style, workplace environment, social responsibility and giving back; these are the things that workers today care about but it’s just not being tracked and there’s no way to go to one place to figure out everything about these companies."
The 2019 Tech Census: Tech Cultures Edition surveyed tech employees, who rated their companies and employers on culture-related topics including leadership, management, workplace, compensation and community involvement. Powderkeg says nearly 270 tech companies were nominated and more than 1,200 people responded to the census.

Hunckler says he hopes the results of the tech census and the awards provides more visibility for Indiana’s tech sector both statewide and nationwide.
"When you look at the workforce as a whole in the United States, 87 percent of people say they have no passion for their job. That is incredibly depressing because we have such amazing companies where in Indiana doing incredible things with just these remarkable cultures and so I want more people to understand what it’s like to work in tech and what kind of opportunities there are in Indiana."
Finalists will be announced for each category and each category will have one winner. One of the finalists will also be named the Overall Top Culture Winner in Indiana. The awards will be presented at an event in September, hosted by Inside INdiana Business host Gerry Dick.
