Sichuan takin are a rare species of animal that are part of a family colloquially known as “goat antelopes,” the zoo said in its announcement on social media. They are native to the Himalayan mountains of Tibet and China.
The zoo said their babies are able to stand and nurse within an hour or two of being born, and this newborn was able to do so in about 50 minutes.
Veterinarian and animal care staff at the zoo weighed the baby animal at 23 pounds.
