(NYSE: DE) took center stage at global tech show CES 2023 in Las Vegas when it unveiled new precision technology that could help farmers reduce fertilizer use by 60%.
The system, ExactShot, gives farmers the opportunity to spray seeds with a precise dose of fertilizer rather than apply an entire stream.
AgriNovus Indiana CEO Mitch Frazier attended CES and discussed the technology during the latest episode of AgriNovus’ podcast, Agbioscience.
“ExactShot is the next step forward in the application of starter fertilizer,” explained John Deere’s Vice President of Production and Precision Ag Production Systems Deanna Kovar. “We all know that farmers are focused on both the economics, agronomic and the environmental sustainability of their operations. And ExactShot is an answer to helping in all three of those areas.”
Deere says the reduction in fertilizer use saves farmers money and slashes the amount of excess chemicals that go into the ground.
“Instead of putting an entire stream of starter fertilizer down, farmers are now just able to dose it onto the seed and give it just the shot it needs to come out of the ground and emerge into a healthy and sustainable plant,” Kovar told Frazier.
Kovar also explains Deere’s new “smart industrial strategy” and what it could mean for farmers.
“We had to really start driving and thinking and organizing ourselves at the system level. And so, we organized the entire company around our customers, the farmers, and their production systems and thinking about not only how can we help them plant better and spray better and harvest better, but also how can we think about the whole system of growing corn or soybeans, and think about how John Deere can help in each step,” said Kovar.
