The funds will be used toward the construction of what will be known as the Fort Wayne Park Foundation Compass Pavilion.
The pavilion will be located within Promenade Park on the riverfront development. It will serve as the anchor venue for events and programs on the development and will also be used for rental opportunities, such as weddings and corporate meetings.
The foundation raised $1 million from area donors, which was matched with $500,000 from the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne. The foundation pledged an additional $150,000 from its unrestricted endowment funds.
"The Park Foundation is excited about the endless opportunities for enjoying the waterfront and downtown that Promenade Park will bring to the community," said Park Foundation President Kathy Callen. "The Park Foundation is committed to supporting not only Promenade Park, but all of the 86 parks in our treasured park system, and will faithfully continue to raise and steward donor funds."
The Compass Pavilion is part of the first phase of the Riverfront Fort Wayne development, construction for which is expected to begin this month. The city approved $17 million in construction contracts for the project last month.
