The school, called Girls IN STEM Academy, will serve grades K-8 and will open in partnership with the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, Every Girl Can STEM and Purdue Polytechnic High School.
Girls IN STEM Academy, to be located at 5136 Michigan Road, will be among the latest in Paramount’s growing network of schools across the state. Paramount currently runs three Indianapolis area schools and expanded into South Bend and Lafayette this academic year.
Paramount has named Chrystal Westerhaus as principal of the new Indianapolis school. Westerhaus was a founding principal of Avondale Meadows Middle School and was director of instruction at Urban Act Academy before accepting her position with Girls IN STEM Academy.
The new charter school is authorized by Trine University in Angola and will focus on an education that encourages girls to explore study among science, technology, engineering and math among other core subjects.
“I am honored to lead Girls IN STEM Academy in its mission to address the significant gender gap in STEM careers,” Westerhaus said in a news release. “In this new role, I’m committed to strengthening our young people, who will impact future generations, and implementing culture change that fosters success for our students and the community at large.”
Girls IN STEM Academy plans to open in time for the 2024-25 school year. The school will begin enrolling students in November as a part of the Enroll Indy program. More information about the new school is available on its website at girlsinstemacademy.org.
