Officials announced this month that the university recorded $216 million in research award funding in the 2023 fiscal year from 824 awards — is the largest in university history.
The largest portion of the funding came from federal agencies, pitching in nearly $120 million in research awards. The university’s largest sponsor was the National Science Foundation, giving $24 million.
With the funding, officials say Notre Dame researchers are expanding their footprint internationally with nearly $38 million across 49 awards dedicated to global research. The university now conducts projects in 62 countries.
“We are grateful to all of the agencies, foundations, industry partners and others who have supported research at the University — research that is not only leading to new discoveries, but is helping to create a safer, healthier, more sustainable and more equitable world,” Vice President for Research Jeffrey Rhoads said in a news release. “Credit ultimately belongs to the dedicated Notre Dame faculty members and students who received the awards and are committed to using every dollar to have the greatest possible impact.”
