The new name replaces Notre Dame International. Notre Dame has 12 locations throughout the world, including London and Rome in Europe; São Paulo, Brazil, in Latin America; Nairobi, Kenya, in Africa; Beijing in Asia; and Jerusalem in the Middle East. The sites foster research and provide international learning experiences for U.S. students and students from afar.
Michael Pippenger, vice president and associate provost for internationalization, said in a university news release that the new name helps emphasize that Notre Dame, while operating from various locations worldwide, acts as one university.
“The update aligns with the University’s strategic framework—which calls for increased global engagement—and underscores Notre Dame Global’s commitment to being the place where Notre Dame meets the world and the world meets Notre Dame,” he said.
Over the past decade, the international population at Notre Dame has increased about 34%, with the most growth coming from Latin America for undergraduates and from Africa and Asia for graduate and professional students, the university said. And during the 2021-22 school year, 77% undergraduate students participated in study abroad programs.
The name change took effect Monday.
“Catholicism is the world’s most global, multicultural and multilingual institution, and Notre Dame must better embody that reality in the coming decade,” university history professor John T. McGreevy said in the news release. “Becoming a more global university is as important for the next generation at Notre Dame as the effort to develop research was in the last, and Notre Dame Global is a crucial strategic partner in that effort.”
Established as Notre Dame International in 2010, Notre Dame Global now spans five continents and contributes to research projects in more than 95 countries, the university said.
