The 19-month, $2.5 million deal with South Korea-based Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd. is for compressor research and testing.
The University of Notre Dame says the research is in support of the development of a 300-megawatt class power generation gas turbine. The testing will take place at NDTL’s 10-megawatt compressor test cell, which is currently under construction. All design, analysis, fabrication and assembly work will take place at the NDTL’s Ignition Park facility in South Bend.
"The opportunity to work with a global leader like DHI is a testament to the unique research and testing capabilities of NDTL and the University as a whole," said Joshua Cameron, director of NDTL. "With the world-class capabilities we are building, our facility will be able to support any manufacturer in research and development for the next generation of turbomachinery products."
The university says the compressor test will "study aerodynamic phenomena that even the most powerful computers cannot simulate." Construction on the NDTL’s compressor test cell is expected to be complete this fall.
The $36 million NDTL facility at Ignition Park opened in June and focuses on research, testing and product development.
