Northern Indiana Rail Line Projects Receive Federal Funding

The Federal Railroad Administration has awarded over $203 million in grant funding for 28 projects in 15 states to help with the deployment of positive train control (PTC) systems. Two of the projects involve the South Shore line in northern Indiana.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District was awarded just over $8 million to complete the design, implementation, training and support for their PTC system. The work is expected to enhance the safety of the commuter rail line. The Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad will also receive up to $720,000 for installation, testing and training for the stretch of railroad from Chicago to South Bend.

The FRA also expects to soon announce another round of applications for more than $46 million in funding. Applications are due 30 days after the notice is published. Congress pushed back the mandate to have the PTC systems in place to December 31 of this year.
