How much your gas bill goes up will vary. Households using an average amount of natural gas will go up about $5 a month. That increase will be phased in over two steps—the first starting this month and the next in the spring of 2025.
That number is the result of a settlement earlier this year between NIPSCO and the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. The IURC must approve requested price increases because NIPSCO is a monopoly. NIPSCO had requested a larger increase of about $8 a month.
NIPSCO says the rate increases are needed due to new federal safety requirements surrounding gas pipelines. The utility is also keen to point out the rate increases will go toward system upgrades that create jobs.
As part of the settlement with the IURC, NIPSCO will also make more money available for people who qualify for income-based energy assistance.
Household electric bills are not affected.
