The new project is called Cavalry Solar and it generates 200 megawatts of energy which can power around 60,000 homes. Cavalry is NIPSCO’s third solar project completed since 2020 and the public utility says the new plant will produce more cost-effective energy.
The plant was built and designed by NextEra Energy Resources and also features battery storage.
The completion of the Cavalry plant is another step for NIPSCO as it increasingly transitions to renewable energy sources. The company said in a release that the shift started in its 2018 and 2021 Integrated Resource Plans, which are required for electric utilities in Indiana every three years.
NIPSCO has already completed two other solar facilities—one also in White County and one in Jasper—and NextEra is building two more solar fields for NIPSCO in Jasper and Starke County.
“The completion of Cavalry Solar, the third solar project in NIPSCO’s generating mix, is a crucial step in advancing our energy generation transition plan to provide sustainable, cost-effective and reliable energy now and into the future,” said NIPSCO President Vince Parisi in the release.
The utility didn’t disclose its investment in the solar plant, but said the Cavalry project will generate $25 million in tax revenue for White County over the life of the facility.
