The historic homes of Cottrell Village include three dwellings, two of which were built in the 1850s.
The buildings include the Norman and Maria Brown House, as well as the William and Emeline Brown House. A third building, a stable barn and guest house built in the 1990s, is also included on the property.
The older dwellings were restored in the 1980s and ’90s by Attica native John Cottrell, a renowned interior decorator. Cottrell would also add the stable barn, as well as a historically appropriate, though non-functioning, privy and smokehouse.
Attica is located about 80 miles northwest of Indianapolis. The homes since been used as gathering places for weddings, architectural and garden tours, and other events, according to Indiana Landmarks.
Cottrell arranged for the village to be donated to Indiana Landmarks prior to his death in 2021. The preservation organization has since invested more than $100,000 in rehabilitation work to the houses and barn.
The houses, barn and two outbuildings are now on the market for $270,000, and Indiana Landmarks will only sell the property with protective covenants to safeguard their current architectural state.
Indiana Landmarks says the new owner will need to invest in additional repairs and updates.
