The nonprofit, which serves around 1,000 clients annually, says the facility will include a living skills training apartment, lighting lab, manual skills room for plumbing and woodworking training and fitness center. Last year, Bosma unveiled its new, $6.6 million headquarters, which uses wireless sensors to help those who are blind or visually impaired navigate the training and work spaces.
In an interview with Inside INdiana Business Reporter Mary-Rachel Redman, Bosma Chief Executive Officer Lou Moneymaker said the center will help the organization better serve an ever-growing need. The rate of blindness in the U.S. is expected to double by 2030 as the aging population grows and Bosma says demand for its services will continue to increase. Moneymaker says the new facility doubles its capacity to provide full-service solutions for clients.
"One of the things I’m most proud of here is the people who go through our training programs — once they move beyond learning the daily living skills and the things they’re confronted with immediately that they don’t know how to overcome — once they overcome those, then they begin thinking about employment. Then we begin moving into employment training and eventually into employment placement," he said. Clients of Bosma Enterprises, Moneymaker tells Inside INdiana Business, have a higher employment rate than the 30 percent national average for people who are blind.
