As the Indiana General Assembly convenes for the 2018 legislative session, Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-16) has made additional changes to Republican leadership and committee assignments in the Senate. The changes follow the resignation of former Sen. Brandt Hershman, who stepped down Tuesday.

Long has appointed Sen. Liz Brown (pictured, R-15) as assistant majority floor leader for Parliamentary Affairs. She succeeds Sen. Rodric Bray (R-37), who was named Majority Floor Leader following Hershman’s resignation. 

The committee assignment changes include:

• Sen. Greg Walker (R-41) becomes the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy.

• Sen. Chip Perfect (R-43) fills the vacancy on the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy and relinquishes his membership on the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

• Sen. Mike Crider (R-28) fills the vacancies on the Senate Committees on Appropriations and Rules and Legislative Procedure. He relinquishes his membership on the Senate Committees on Agriculture and Natural Resources.

• Sen. Randy Head (R-18) fills the vacancy on Legislative Council and Legislative Council Technology Oversight Subcommittee.

Long says the person selected to succeed Hershman in the 7th district will serve on the Senate Committees on Agriculture/Natural Resources, Commerce and Technology/Utilities, and Local Government. That person will be chosen by a caucus of Republican precinct committee members and will serve the remainder of Hershman’s term.

"The Senate has been fortunate to have had the service of talents like Luke Kenley and Brandt Hershman for many years," Long said in a news release. "That being said, as we pass the torch, I am confident that we have the right men and women with strong leadership skills and integrity that can begin a lasting legacy of their own. I place my trust in them with their new roles and look forward to a productive legislative session."

Former Sen. Luke Kenley announced his retirement from the Senate in July. Sen. Victoria Sparks (R-20) was chosen to succeed Kenley in September.
