More Cuts Coming to Indy Star

The Indianapolis Newspaper Guild, which represents approximately 100 employees of The Indianapolis Star, says the publication has announced a 15 percent reduction in its newsroom staff. In an online post, Editor Jeff Taylor says the Star will “significantly recast” and expand its reporting staff in the coming weeks. The guild says the new jobs will amount to six new reporters covering beats including “beverages, party crasher and holidays and observances.”
Taylor says the paper will reduce the number of managers, which “comes with pain,” but is necessary for future growth.
The guild says the cuts involve members of the photography department and that the copy desk is being “dissolved.”
Taylor announced a refocused approach in several areas including expanded investigative reporting, quality of life and business coverage, as well as an additional emphasis on digital and social media engagement. You can read his comments by clicking here.

Statement From The Indianapolis Newspaper Guild
The Indianapolis Star today announced today its “newsroom of the future.” It involves 15 percent fewer journalists than the newsroom of the present. The copy desk, those folks who make sure stories are readable, who catch a tremendous amount of mistakes and who generally make everything of higher quality, is being “dissolved.” We're going to lose 5 of 11 photographers and other support staff. Some good middle managers who guide journalists young and old will be out of a job soon, too. What the paper is telling the public is that there will be 6 more reporters. And there will be. With beats like beverages, party crasher and holidays and observances. No, we are not making this up. Welcome to the future.
