Michigan City Municipal Airport has been awarded a $256,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for tree removal and runway upgrades.
The airport says the $256,284 grant will fund the removal of tree obstructions, improve an existing runway and plan for a future runway extension.
The funding is part of the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program. This is the airport’s second federal grant in the past year. Last September, the FAA awarded the facility more than $500,000 to enhance traffic safety efforts. A 2012 economic impact study pegs the Michigan City Municipal Airport’s impact at more than $52 million annually.
Within the last month, the airports in Griffith, Fort Wayne and Fishers also announced federal funding for improvements.
