The town in Lake County is seeking to create a 40-member Momentum Community Committee that will meet monthly to help develop a comprehensive plan.
Their first meeting will be from 4 to 6 p.m. July 19 at the Dean and Barbara White Community Center at 6600 Broadway in Merrillville.
“We’re looking for a diverse group of individuals, interests and neighborhoods to get involved so we can incorporate the different points of view from the community,” Merrillville Planning and Building Director Sheila Shine said in a news release.
Merrillville officials have been working for months with RDG Planning & Design to gather data for a comprehensive plan called Merrillville Momentum.
The plan is expected to provide direction for economic development, land use, zoning, infrastructure, utilities, housing, education, recreation and more.
Other opportunities will be available for the public to get involved outside of the Momentum Community Committee. Those include several upcoming workshops at the Dean and Barbara White Community Center.
Dates include: 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 19; 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 20; 5 to 7 p.m. July 20; and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 21.
Sessions will focus on the area of Merrillville from 73rd Avenue north to the town’s limits at 53rd Avenue, though town officials say they encourage residents from across the city to attend.
“We’re certainly looking forward to making our comprehensive plan a great plan for the future of Merrillville,” Shine said.
