Marian, IWU Hoist Championship Trophies

The Marian University women’s team and the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s team each beat higher-ranked opponents Tuesday night to be crowned best in NAIA Division II.
Marian was ranked ninth in the country and defeated third-ranked Southern Oregon 59-48 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The Knights, coached by 2003 Indiana Miss Basketball and former Purdue University and WNBA standout Katie Gearlds, had a record-breaking 32-6 season and won their first NAIA DII championship in history.
Fifth-ranked IWU knocked-off top-ranked University of Saint Francis (Fort Wayne) at the College of the Ozarks Keeter Gymnasium in Point Lookout, Missouri. The Cougars finished the season 33-5 and have won two national titles in three seasons.
