Subscribe NowLegacy Feed, a partnership between the farmer-owned Keystone Cooperative and swine management company Signature Farms LP, has begun operations at its new feed mill in the Henry County community of Millville.
The mill has 1.5 million bushels of grain storage and the capacity to produce 300,000 tons of hog feed pellets, Keystone said in a news release. Partnership leaders view the fully-automated mill as a catalyst for growth for corn and hog farmers in eastern Indiana.
“The completion of the Legacy Feed mill expands Keystone’s swine and animal nutrition into a new territory. This allows us to continue to expand our footprint into this region and actively look to grow our swine contract partners,” Eric Freeman, director of swine and animal nutrition for Legacy Feed, said in the release. “This mill is unlike any in our area and will best serve contract swine producers who are looking for growth opportunities on their farm. We are excited to build a robust team that will best support and serve our customers.”
The partnership between Indianapolis-based Keystone Cooperative and Milroy-based Signature Farms was created in 2022. At the time, the partnership was between Indianapolis-based Co-Alliance Cooperative Inc. and Signature Farms, but earlier this year the cooperative merged with Crawfordsville-based Ceres Solutions Cooperative Inc. to create Keystone Cooperative.
The new Henry County feed mill is a key component of the partnership, cooperative leaders had told Inside INdiana Business. The aim is to further diversify the cooperative’s offerings by supporting grain and pork producers in eastern Indiana.
The mill, a revamp of an existing facility, services deliveries within 70 miles of Millville. The operation was completed in early September, and the first load of feed was delivered on Sept. 11.
Legacy Feed said the mill has brought 25 full-time jobs to the area and the company is looking to hire more workers as it expands.
