Lafayette Stations Air Inaugural Newscast

The WPBI newscasts began Monday on the new media company’s NBC and Fox affiliates and will also run on the new local ABC affiliate when it launches, which is expected to happen in July.
WPBI General Manager Tom Comerford tells Inside INdiana Business the newscasts work toward the stations’ goal of being local. He says Lafayette is growing and therefore, its time for the city to have its own affiliates. WLFI-TV is the CBS affiliate in Lafayette.
Comerford says, as part of the push to be more local, the stations, along with the WPBI news operation seeks to be more community involved through charity work and assistance for other nonprofits.
Comerford says when the local ABC affiliate launches, it is unclear of the Indianapolis ABC affiliate, WRTV, will continue in the market. Currently, the WPBI Fox affiliate is the only one of its kind in Lafayette, while some cable providers continue to offer the NBC and CBS affiliates from Lafayette and Indianapolis.
Star City Broadcasting also owns four local radio stations: WSHY-AM, WAZY-FM, WBPE-FM, WYCM-FM.
