The bank also announced it is donating the $25,000 sponsorship fee for the this year’s race in June, even though it was canceled because of the pandemic.
Sunburst is a series of races, including a marathon, half-marathon, a 10K and 5K run and draws thousands of runners.
The event, which launched in 1984, is owned by Beacon Health System and is a major fundraiser for Beacon Children’s Hospital in South Bend.
The health system says the KeyBank gift is earmarked for its Child Life Program, which supports young patients and their families during visits to the children’s hospital.
“We hope this reassurance of our commitment to Sunburst Races and Beacon Children’s will encourage other organizations to follow suit, so collectively we can all continue to help make a difference in our communities,” said Nicholas Bontreger, president of KeyBank Northern Indiana market.
KeyBank has sponsored the race for eight years.
Beacon says participants from the 2020 race, who opted to donate their registration fees, raised nearly $30,000 for Beacon Children’s Hospital.
