Our partners at the Daily Journal report the health system made the decision on the Discovery Center due to low enrollment.
The facility will close at the end of the current academic year, though a press release from Johnson Memorial Health says the closure could come earlier, if needed, as officials monitor enrollment and staffing levels.
"Unfortunately, mounting financial losses associated with operating the center could not be overlooked given other pressures also facing the hospital in our current economic environment," Larry Heydon, chief executive officer of Johnson Memorial Health, said in the news release. "After many months of thoughtful consideration, we came to the conclusion that closing the day care was necessary so that we could remain focused on our top priority of providing quality health care to the people of Johnson County."
Discovery Center opened in 1988 and provides childcare for hospital staff and the community. Heydon says hospital officials have created incentive programs to keep staff until the center closes to provide services for the children at the facility.
