Officials say the programs must meet strict performance standards for downtown revitalization to receive the designation.
The State of Indiana’s Main Street Program works with the National Main Street Center to find local programs that meet standards and evaluated the Jeffersonville program. Executive Director, Jay Ellis, says the designation indicates the progress that’s been made in downtown Jeffersonville.
"Our downtown is the heart and soul of our community," said Ellis. “We work to keep the area vibrant and to create an energy that attracts people to live here and open businesses here."
Main Street America programs last year generated nearly $5 billion in local reinvestment, generated over 25,000 new jobs and helped rehabilitate over 8,000 historic buildings. Updates on Jeffersonville’s program can be found here.
