Ivy Tech Programs to Take Competency-Based Approach

Subscribe NowTwo competency-based credentials, the first for Ivy Tech Community College, have been approved by a national higher education accreditation organization. The Software Development Technical Certificate and the Business Operations, Applications, and Technology Technical Certificate will be offered starting in April.
The programs received the go-ahead from the Higher Learning Commission’s Institutional Actions Council. The method is different than traditional education practices by offering education at the student’s pace, focusing on demonstrating competency mastery.
Ivy Tech President Sue Ellspermann says "higher education is seeing a trend of competency based education, particularly for working adults. For a majority of community college students, many have workplace knowledge and competencies in their area of study, which means they can accelerate through their degree, earn their credential faster, and experience a more successful career."
The school says the competency-based approach is well-suited for working professionals seeking credentials or more skills, those who are under-employed and those who have some college credit, but are unemployed.
