The school says the system, valued up to $200,000, was given to the program from an anonymous donor.
This instrument allows users to experience a virtual reality in the operation of an airplane. Ivy Tech says the training system allows students to earn credit towards their licenses and can save them up to $200 an hour.
“Someone who has never flown in their lifetime can safely learn the ropes while using this simulator,” says Dan Leonard, an Ivy Tech Aviation Technology instructor. “It’s a great tool for our students and community members to keep up on vital techniques and skills.”
This simulator was donated in pieces, allowing it to be transported to Ivy Tech. Faculty re-assembled and calibrated the device during winter break. It’s now being used in class with students.
While it doesn’t take the place of actual aircraft training, Leonard says it provides a safe way to gain needed experience.
“When you’re learning to fly, it takes you a couple months before you don’t make mistakes,” said Leonard. “This instrument allows you to learn how to not make mistakes without using natural resources. I feel students will get the maximum benefits of it with Ivy Tech.”
