IU Students Receive Barnes & Thornburg Scholarships

Subscribe NowKatherine Bingaman, a first-year law student at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, is the 2022 recipient of Barnes & Thornburg’s 1L Diversity Scholarship. She will be a summer associate in the South Bend office in 2022. Indiana University Maurer School of Law student Blake T. Welter is the recipient of Barnes & Thornburg’s annual 1L Diversity Scholarship in the firm’s Indianapolis office.
The firm awarded four 1L Diversity Scholarships this year, the other two to students who will be summer associates in the Chicago and Los Angeles offices.
Bingaman is active in law school as a member of the Feminist Law Forum, Women’s Law Caucus and Public Interest Law Foundation, and a volunteer for the Inmate Legal Assistance Program and Protective Order Project. She also is an Indiana Conference for Legal Education Opportunity fellow. A graduate of Purdue University, Bingaman was secretary of Pi Sigma Alpha honor society and active in the Pre-Law Club and Purdue student government.
The scholarship is open to first-year law students with a demonstrated commitment to positive change on the diversity, inclusion and equity front and to contributing meaningfully to the DEI goals of Barnes & Thornburg and the legal profession.
Welter, who received an undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona, is deeply involved in several law school organizations, including Outreach for Legal Literacy, Latinx Law Student Association, National Lawyers Guild, Intellectual Property Association, and Life Experience, Then School.
