The IU department has been part of the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology. The decision is the latest movement as the two universities work to split their Indianapolis presence.
The department will be a part of the Herron school, starting Jan. 1, 2024, after the IU Board of Trustees approved the move.
The move does not interfere with student’s degree timelines, IU said. The department’s administration will relocate to Herron, but the offices and classrooms will stay where they are.
The department’s retainment and expansion into the Herron school will create more opportunities for students to work in music technology and music therapy, the university said.
The collaboration means more research opportunities will also be available, according to IU. Department Chair Debra Burns recently received a $2.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health and the National Endowment for the Arts to create a research network to study neurological and biopsychosocial mechanisms of music-based interventions in the treatment of chronic pain.
