IU Health Medical Tops ‘Best of’ List

Subscribe NowIndiana University Health Medical Center in Indianapolis can once again claim bragging rights as the best hospital in the state of Indiana, according to the annual listing by U.S. News & World Report. The publication ranks hospitals nationwide on a state-by-state basis.
The publication made some changes to the methodology for 2019 and focused on 12 data-driven specialty rankings, such as cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, neurology, orthopedics, diabetes, gynecology, and geriatrics. “This year we revised the methodology to incorporate new measures of patient-centered care and to enhance how we account for differences in hospitals’ patient populations,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News.
The publication urges people not to compare this year’s rankings to previous years due to changes in the criteria. “The new model provides a more comprehensive assessment that is useful to patients, families and their medical professionals,” said Harder.
Here’s a partial list of the Indiana rankings:
- Indiana University Health Medical Center
- Elkhart General Hospital – Elkhart (tied, 2nd)
- Deaconess Hospital – Evansville (tied, 2nd)
- Memorial Hospital – South Bend (4th)
- Community Hospital East – Indianapolis (tied, 5th)
- St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital (tied, 5th)
- Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital (tied. 5th)
- IU Health Arnett Hospital (tied, 8th)
- IU Health Bloomington Hospital (tied, 8th)
- Goshen Hospital – Goshen (tied, 8th)
- St Joseph Health System – Mishawaka (tied, 8th)
In the overall national ranking, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn claimed the top spot, followed by Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass at Number 2 and Johns Hopkins Hospital at number 3. To be placed on the honor roll, hospitals must be ranked in the top 20 for exceptional treatment in multiple areas of care.
