IU Celebrates Hospital Construction Milestone

Subscribe NowA nearly $400 million project on the campus of Indiana University was celebrated Tuesday as officials conducted the "topping out" ceremony of the IU Health Regional Academic Health Center in Bloomington. Construction crews placed the final steel beam on the structural frame of the massive health facility.
The ceremony marks the completion of the exterior and vertical construction of the seven-story project.
“I thank the hundreds of skilled trades people who have laid the groundwork for a facility that will be a preeminent environment to practice, work, teach, learn and be cared for,” said Brian Shockney, president, IU Health South Central Region.
IU Health Bloomington Hospital last week hosted beam signing sessions allowing for hospital employees, volunteers and community members to sign the steel. The health system says more than 1,000 people participated.
The 735,000 square-foot complex is a combination healthcare center and educational facility. It includes inpatient and outpatient services, a women’s center, trauma center and emergency department.
The facility also includes a new IU Academic Health Sciences Building which will consolidate most of the university’s health science programs under one facility.
The new medical campus is scheduled to open in 2021.
IU Health has reached an agreement to sell the property at the current hospital site to the City of Bloomington.
