IPL to Cut Ribbon on Natural Gas Plant

Subscribe NowOfficials from Indianapolis Power & Light Co. will Tuesday cut the ribbon on its $600 million natural gas plant in Morgan County. The utility says the plant reduces the rate of key emissions by 98 percent compared to the coal and oil-fired units it has replaced.
The Combined-Cycle Gas Turbine natural gas plant is located at IPL’s Eagle Valley Generating Station in Martinsville and has been in the works for several years. In May, IPL Chief Executive Officer Craig Jackson appeared on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick and said the plant will have a major boost to the economy in Morgan County.

IPL says the facility, along with the conversion of coal-fired units at its Harding Street location in 2016, makes natural gas the utility’s largest source of generating capacity. Indiana Secretary of Commerce Jim Schellinger will join IPL leaders for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
IPL is currently seeking approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to increase rates to help offset the cost of the facility. The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor said the amount the utility is looking to raise through the increase, about $97 million, is unnecessary. The OUCC has recommended a smaller increase of less than $5 million.
The IURC is expected to make a ruling on the rate increase request later this year.
