The company is seeking incentives from the city to add new, state-of-the-art equipment it says will accommodate additional production.
The Memphis, Tennessee-based company’s Crawfordsville plant produces corrugated packaging for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, processed food, beverage, shipping, distribution and e-commerce customers.
The city did not state how much International Paper plans to invest in the new equipment. A tax abatement request form provided by the city had that information redacted, and the company did not respond to a request for more information from Inside INdiana Business.
“Crawfordsville is an important part of International Paper’s corrugated packaging business,” International Paper Region General Manager Mandi Gilliland said in a news release. “We are excited to identify improvement opportunities for the facility and continue to make a positive impact in the local community.”
The investment will help retain 160 jobs in Crawfordsville, according to the abatement request. No new jobs are expected to be added as a result.
“International Paper has a long history of success in our community. The decision to invest in further enhancing their manufacturing operations in Crawfordsville positions them to remain highly competitive well into the future,” said Crawfordsville Mayor Todd Barton. “We truly appreciate their continued confidence in our community, to work alongside the high-quality team they’ve assembled locally, in ensuring the success of their new investment.”
The Crawfordsville City Council’s next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 13, though it’s unclear if the abatement request will be heard.
International Paper Co. employs about 39,000 people across its global footprint. The company reported $21.2 billion in net sales in 2022.
