TechPoint Foundation For Youth says the inaugural Indiana VEX Robotics State Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium will feature 300 teams from K-12 schools throughout the state.
The event is a product of the organization’s State Robotics Initiative, launched in 2016. TechPoint Foundation For Youth says, since that time, the state has gone from having just over 70 elementary school robotics teams to more than 900.
"We are committed to hosting an exceptional event that will reward Indiana students who have worked diligently to earn a chance to compete at the state championship level," said George Giltner, state director of robotics for TechPoint Foundation for Youth. "We feel that hosting the event at this venue will demonstrate to Indiana students, parents, educators, and the larger community that academic competitions can, and should, be elevated to the same level of prominence as sporting events."
The event will be held March 10, 2018 at Lucas Oil Stadium and will be free and open to the public. It will also include an interactive STEM fair with hands-on activities hosted by local and national companies, higher education institutions, and community partners.
"Providing young people with high-quality educational opportunities in STEM fields helps to strengthen our city’s pipeline of talent and build the workforce of the future," Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said in a news release. "With a scale that is unmatched across the country, the Indiana VEX Robotics State Championship provides educational opportunities to hundreds of students from across the state."
TechPoint Foundation For Youth says it plans to expand the SRI into middle schools during the 2018-2019 academic year with plans to eventually move into high schools.
