Indy to Detail ‘State of Tourism’

The organization says it will detail "another record-setting year for the tourism industry" at Thursday afternoon’s event at the Indiana Convention Center.
The presentation will also include Madam CJ Walker and the historic Madam Walker Legacy Center being awarded the city’s highest tourism award.
Indianapolis is not the only place seeing a tourism increase. Late last year, Bedford-based Radius Indiana reported visitor spending in the eight-county region totaled more than $283 million and generated more than $206 million in economic impact in southwest central Indiana, topping the previous year’s totals. In September, the Greater Kokomo Visitors Bureau said visitors contributed more than $135 million to the county’s economy in 2016, a 15 percent increase over the most recent study in 2013.
State-level efforts to boost tourism are ramping up as well. Over the summer, Indiana Office of Tourism Development Executive Director Mark Newman said a road rally covering 500 miles and 10 stops resulted in a nine-page spread in Midwest Living magazine. At the time, Newman also told INside INdiana Business a move by the Indiana General Assembly to form a two-year tourism study committee is important to the industry’s growth.
