The JW Marriott Indianapolis will have a more than 30-story graphic adorning its exterior leading up to the historic race.
The graphic features the Borg-Warner Trophy, an IndyCar, racing stripes, along with the phrase "Epic Race. Epic Place." It will be installed on the hotel’s exterior by Indianapolis-based Sport Graphics.
"I can’t think of a better way to build anticipation for the 100th Running and celebrate this city’s unique capacity to successfully host marquee sporting events," said Patty Martin, member of the 100th Running Host Committee’s Executive Committee and the 2016 chair of the 500 Festival Board of Directors. "The 100th Running Host Committee, with its many wonderful volunteers and generous donors, is extremely proud of this effort that will inspire pride amongst Hoosiers and awe from onlookers across the globe."
The graphic will be 246 feet wide, 303 feet tall and a total of nearly 75,000 square feet. Crews have already begun installing the 501 panels by hand with installation expected to be complete for most of the month of May. The graphic will be more than twice the size of the image used for Super Bowl XLVI in 2012 and a third larger than the Final Four bracket installed in 2015.
The 100th Running Host Committee says if all of the panels were laid end-to-end, they would cover 13,200 feet, which is the length of the 2.5 mile oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 will take place May 29.
