The funding, which is part of the city’s Annual Grants Program, will support the programming and general operations of nonprofit arts and culture organizations serving Indianapolis and Marion County.
The city says grant amounts range from $2,000 to $75,000.
According to the city, new scoring criteria regarding racial and socioeconomic equity was applied to the program last year. A juried panel of judges evaluated applications based on three areas: community impact, artistic merit, and organizational capacity.
“We’re proud to continue the City’s strong support for arts and culture organizations, empowering a record number of grant recipients with the tools to thrive,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. “As we prioritize equity and inclusion in public policy, it is only fitting that our engagements with arts and culture keep pace. I look forward to witnessing the transformative effects these funds have on our innovative, diverse, and vibrant creative community.”
The 10 top-scoring organizations are: Arte Mexicano en Indiana, Asante Art Institute of Indianapolis, Big Car Collaborative, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Fonseca Theatre Co., Freetown Village, Iibada Dance Co., Indiana Performing Arts Centre, The New Harmony Project, and The Performing Arts Conservatory.
“Indianapolis is experiencing a creative renaissance, as evidenced by the record number of applications and grant awards. Our sector is also making progress in advancing racial and socioeconomic equity, with 70% of the top awards going to BIPOC-led and -serving organizations,” said Julie Goodman, chief executive officer of Indy Arts Council. “These results demonstrate an important return on the City’s investment in Indy’s creative economy, which generates $440 million in annual economic impact and plays a major role in moving Indianapolis forward as a city where ‘A Full Creative Life for All’ is possible.”
