Two public meetings are planned next month with a presentation on proposed improvements as part of the Revive I-70 project and the opportunity for one-on-one conversations for feedback and questions.
The first meeting is set for Aug. 9 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Whitewater Hall on the Indiana University East campus. The second is a virtual meeting Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. on Microsoft Teams.
The Revive I-70 plan was first announced in December.
INDOT said in a news release the construction will attempt to ease congestion, improve traffic flow and better safety on the interstate. The current Revive I-70 plan expects to repave and add two travel lanes as well as upgrade interchanges and widen bridges.
The finished product will remake the major state artery into a six-lane interstate with three lanes in each direction and improve 40 bridges potentially with complete replacements, deck replacements, deck overlays and painting.
The improvements will be over 20 miles long from west of Cambridge City in Wayne County to the Indiana/Ohio state line.
The project is at the environmental and preliminary design stage, meaning teams are surveying data and vetting solutions. Due to the surface area of the project, INDOT plans to split it into three contracts with the first expected to break ground in late 2024.
An overall cost of the project has not been provided. An overall completion date has also not yet been determined.
Another public hearing and formal comment period is expected to be scheduled later this fall.
