The zoo was selected as the recipient of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums 2015 Exhibit Award for Innovation for the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center. The exhibit opened in May 2014.
“While creating a space designed specifically for orangutans’ needs, the Indianapolis Zoo also began a complex journey to create a new hope for these apes. The Center has now become a model of how a Midwest community can change the future of endangered species, and this award further demonstrates the Center’s global impact,” Indianapolis Zoo President and CEO Mike Crowther said.
Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Zoo has again earned accreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Officials say this year marks 34 years of continual accreditation for the zoo.
“The Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredits only those zoos and aquariums that meet the highest standards and are proven leaders in the care and conservation of wildlife as well as education. The community can take great pride in knowing that the Indianapolis Zoo is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of conservationists,” AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy said.
The announcement was made at the Association of Zoos and Aquariums 2015 Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Indianapolis Zoo will host the conference in 2017.
