Earlier this month, IWU President Jon Kulaga announced the selection of Rev. Dr. Yamil Acevedo as interim chief officer of the seminary. Acevedo began in the role July 1 and is expected to serve in the position “as long as needed until the next chief administrator is named,” according to a university news release.
Acevedo is taking over after Colleen Derr left at the end of June to take a role as president of Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts. The seminary’s vice president of operations also recently took a new position elsewhere, according to the release.
Acevedo has served as the director of theological programs in Spanish for Wesley Seminary and will report directly to the university president in his new interim role.
The university did not outline a timeline for naming new leadership at the seminary, but writes that “an existing leader elsewhere will likely step away from one key role and move into the chief officer role as Wesley Seminary.”
In the meantime, Acevedo said he hopes “to continue creating bridges between the church academy, communicating with clarity and boldness to Christians everywhere the value of equipping themselves for contextual ministry engagement to reach their spheres of influence whether in vocational ministry or a secular job.”
“A clear understanding of who we are our our contribution to the undivided formation of the people of God to accomplish God’s mission in the 21st century has to be part of our message,” Acevedo said.
