November’s increase restarted a trend that took place for most of 2023, when the state’s unemployment rate rose at least one-tenth of a percent every month since the 3% mark in April. October’s unemployment rate was unchanged from September.
The DWD said Indiana’s total private employment stands at 2,859,100, marking a new peak for the state. The increase in jobs last month is being attributed to gains in the private educational and health services and trade, transportation and utilities sectors.
The state’s labor force participation rate remained flat at 63.3% and is still above the national rate of 62.8%. The labor force, which includes residents who are either employed or seeking employment, stands at 3,423,256, up about 1,600 from the previous month.
The DWD said the state had 103,265 open job postings as of Dec. 18, while 15,164 unemployment insurance claims were filed.
The state’s unemployment rate equals the national rate, which fell two-tenths of a percent in November.
