The publication determined the ranking by comparing all 50 states across three categories: disease risk factors and prevalence, substance abuse and lifestyle habits and health outlook.
The categories included a total of 21 metrics that the states were evaluated on to receive a total score out of 100.
Indiana is ranked the 10th least healthy state in the U.S. with a score of 76.37 out of 100. Forbes Advisor noted that nearly 185 Hoosiers die from heart disease per 100,000 residents, and 10.8% of adults in Indiana have diabetes.
Improving health care has been a priority for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, which last month released its initial Indiana Prosperity 2035 Report Card that showed the state ranks 49th in the nation for health care premium costs and 47th for actual health care expenditures.
The top five least healthy states, according to Forbes Advisor, are West Virginia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Kentucky. Conversely, the healthiest states are Hawaii, Utah, Connecticut, Minnesota and Massachusetts.
