The nonprofit’s awards honor those who have enriched others’ lives with awareness and appreciation of Indiana’s history.
“These individuals and organizations have led and inspired so many Hoosiers with their passion for history, sharing their knowledge and work with others throughout their communities and across the state,” President and CEO Jody Blankenship said in a news release. “We are excited to be able to present these awards to the recipients in person, congratulating them on their efforts and showing them how valuable they are.”
Jacob P. Dunn Jr. Award: Peter J. De Kever of Mishawaka
This award honors the author of the best article in IHS’s Traces of Indiana and Midwestern History.
Caleb Mills Indiana History Teacher of the Year: Jeff Swisher of Hammond
This award honors an educator who currently teaches American or Indiana history and is recognized for having a significant influence on their students.
Dorothy Riker Hoosier Historian Award: Thomas Hamm of Richmond and Tom and Marty Davis of Indianapolis
This award honors historians who have made contributions to the field of historical scholarship.
Eli Lilly Lifetime Achievement Award: Barbara Wood of Indianapolis and Michael Mavis, Muncie
This honor is given to a person who has made extraordinary, longtime contributions to the field of history or IHS.
Hubert Hawkins History Award: Ed Fujawa of Indianapolis and Frank Vargo of Whiting
This award is given to someone who has displayed distinguished service in local history.
Indiana History Outstanding Organization Event or Project Award: SullivanMunce Cultural Center, “Zionsville Interim Report, Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory”
This honor is presented to an organization that has put on an exceptional educational or historical event.
Outstanding Collaborative Project Award: Delaware County Historical Society, Muncie, “Notable Women of Delaware County and Muncie Project”
This award is presented to a historical or heritage organization that has built a project with one or more partners and shares county or regional history.
Outstanding Historical Organization Award: Evansville Wartime Museum of Evansville and Irvington Historical Society of Indianapolis
This award is given to a local or county historical society, organization or site in Indiana with remarkable service to its community and has demonstrated excellent application of professional standards and best practices.
Willard C. Heiss Family History-Genealogy Award: Sheila Kell of Vernon
This honor is presented to a family historian for distinguished service and career in the field.
