A panel of auto racing journalists, participants and historians selected Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart for induction into the hall which will now include stars of the Brickyard 400 and the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis.
Gordon and Stewart, both of whom have ties to central Indiana, were chosen from a ballot of 14 nominees. Gordon is a five-time Brickyard 400 winner, including the inaugural race in 1994, and won the NASCAR series championship four times. Stewart has won two Brickyard 400 races and three NASCAR series championships. He is also a former Verizon IndyCar Series champion.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame was previously known as the Auto Racing Hall of Fame at the IMS Museum. The 2018 inductees were announced Tuesday as part of "Founder’s Day," which signified the 109th anniversary of the founding of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Company. The IMS Museum also debuted a new logo for the hall of fame.
"We are thrilled that the first class of inductees with our new name and election criteria honor two drivers who mean so much to fans in Central Indiana and around the world" said Tony George, president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation.
Gordon and Stewart will be officially inducted into the hall of fame May 24, ahead of the 102nd Indianapolis 500.
