On Saturday, Milan High School will debut the new trophy room honoring the 1954 basketball team behind what became known as the “Milan Miracle.”
The new space in the gym lobby of Milan High School was designed by Hal Kovert and Amanda Hunsucker with TowerPinkster, an architecture and engineering firm headquartered in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
“I was inspired by the passion and excitement around the history of this town,” Hunsucker said in a news release. “Being part of a design team that created a space where people will visit and see the murals and trophy for years to come is very fulfilling.”
The new space features aged-look hardwood flooring and lines designed to reflect the floor of the 1954 championship game. The trophy room includes a mural of images of the championship team, cheerleaders, a program and more on the walls. It also features other Milan sports on the mural.
“We are thrilled to unveil the newly renovated gym lobby at Milan High School — a space built to celebrate the rich history of Milan Athletics while fostering a sense of community pride for all who enter,” said Milan Principal Ryan Langferman. “This space will not only serve as a welcoming entry point for students and visitors but also as a versatile area for various school events and activities.”
The Milan boys basketball team made history in 1954 by becoming the smallest school to win the Indiana High School Boys Basketball Tournament by beating Muncie Central High School. The game-winning shot was made by Bobby Plump, and the story went on to inspire “Hoosiers.”
Plump said he and his teammates were “absolutely amazed” at the new trophy room.
“We didn’t know what to expect. It is so much of an improvement, it’s awe-inspiring,” said Plump. “It just jumps out at you. You have to stop and look at it.”
Fans will get a chance to check out the updated trophy room, as well as updated lobby and concession spaces, on Saturday during Milan’s home opener versus Lawrenceburg High School.
A second renovation phase at the school gym is currently underway that will create a new weight room for future Milan student-athletes.
