The award will provide $50,000, mentorship services and rent-free lab space at the institute.
To support the winner’s research, the team will receive one year of access to two wet lab biology benches, use of desks in a coworking space with conference room access, and participation in the IBRI’s AXIS Mentoring Program.
The winner will have access to shared equipment, IBRI’s Dr. August M. Watanabe Drug Discovery Laboratory and group pricing for license of drug discovery platforms.
“This competition is about more than access to lab space,” IBRI CEO Dr. Alan Palkowitz said in a news release. “It’s about enabling the best science to leap forward and catalyze scientific innovation through access to state-of-the-art capabilities and collaboration.”
The IBRI said startups that focus on therapeutics or diagnostics for neurodegenerative and neuromuscular research, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, are preferred to apply. Those with oncology or immunology areas of focus will be considered, and dandidates from minority backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
The organization are accepting applications through early fall and will notify the top three candidates to give a virtual presentation. A winner will then be announced in November 2023 and will move into the IBRI’s incubator space by Jan. 1, 2024.
