The two will work together to develop new approaches for keeping cats safe and healthy through study of the animal’s microbiome, or microorganisms found in the gut.
“This collaboration leverages the IBRI’s strong translational science capabilities in partnership with BiomEdit to pursue opportunities that otherwise would not happen,” IBRI CEO Alan Palkowitz said in a news release.
Leaders from BiomEdit and the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute say their research will lend a better understanding to how foods are digested, translating to potential benefits for gut health. The collaboration will bring drug discovery experience within the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute to BiomEdit’s research and development team.
The organizations’ research is being underwritten by the Indiana 21st Century Research and Technology Fund, created by the Indiana Economic Development Corp.
“Access to the 21 Fund and Indiana’s full ecosystem of support for growth-stage companies like BiomEdit unlocks our ability to innovate transformative, novel solutions faster,” BiomEdit CEO Aaron Schacht said in the news release. “We are grateful for IEDC and their fund administrator, Applied Research Institute (ARI), for their support of BiomEdit’s mission to address some of the most important problems in animal health, sustainability and food security.”
BiomEdit, a spin-off of Greenfield-based Elanco Animal Health, launched in April 2022 with $40 million in Series A funding. It announced its first commercial partnership with European animal nutrition company Nutreco in January. About a month later, Nutreco shared that it had acquired a minority stake in the Fishers-based company.
The IBRI is located inside the 16 Tech Innovation District near downtown Indianapolis.
