The award was established in 2023 with the goal of helping startups bring their innovations closer to commercialization.
The winner will receive a $50,000 cash price, as well as up to two lab benches in the IBRI’s biology lab for one year, access to the institute’s coworking space, conference rooms and programming.
Additionally, the recipient will receive access to mentorship from scientists at IBRI and Eli Lilly and Co., as well as leaders with expertise in the startup’s research focus. Lilly is a sponsor of the award.
“This emerging life science company competition goes beyond mere lab access; it’s about propelling cutting-edge research and innovation through state-of-the-art capabilities and collaboration,” IBRI President and CEO Alan Palkowitz said in a news release.
The institute is seeking startups with a primary focus on therapeutics, diagnostics or technology platforms related to cardiometabolic health and neurodegenerative disease research. However, those with oncology or immunology areas of focus will also be considered.
The inaugural winner, announced in January, was Indianapolis-based NĒRx BioSciences Inc., which is working to develop new anticancer therapeutics specifically for the treatment of lung and ovarian cancer.
Applications are being accepted through Sept. 30. The top three applicants will asked to give a virtual presentation later this fall, with a winner being announced in November.
