Hoops Surpasses Gridiron in January Wagering

Subscribe NowNew data from the Indiana Gaming Commission shows more than $500 million in wagers were placed last month at Indiana’s sportsbooks, surpassing the previous one-month record of $463 million set in November.
Gaming analysts at PlayIndiana.com say Indiana is one of only seven states with legalized sportsbooks that have surpassed the half-billion-dollar mark in one month’s time.
“Indiana continues to punch above its weight class, remaining a model of success and a role model for other states to follow. As an example, Ohio regulators have drafted a particularly strong framework for that state’s impending launch of sports betting, and it is no coincidence that it draws upon the blueprint Indiana put together years ago,” said Eric Ramsey, an analyst for PlayUSA.com.
The $500 million worth of bets translated to over $3.3 million worth of taxes for the state of Indiana.
PlayIndiana.com says football is the most popular sport for gambling around the U.S. However, in Indiana, bets on basketball surpassed football.
Football bets on Indiana sportsbooks measured $118 million, while basketball took in $192 million.
