Eric Holcomb returned from his trip to Canada on Wednesday with an agreement in place to foster economic growth. The governor signed a memorandum of understanding with Ontario Premier Doug Ford designed to identify opportunities to boost ties between the Indiana and Ontario.
Holcomb’s office says the agreement creates a framework for collaboration across economic development and investment, workforce development, and regulatory cooperation.
The partnership also aims to further innovation and growth across key sectors, including infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, aerospace and aviation, and agriculture, among others.
“Indiana and Canada share a strong and proven partnership, and I was pleased to be back in Ontario earlier this week as we worked to build on the ties that help us realize our shared vision for the future,” Holcomb said in a news release. “Our newest memorandum of understanding signed this week with Premier Ford further affirms our commitment to take decisive action fostering even deeper bonds that will shape the very future of opportunities in our respective regions.”
The governor’s office says 78 Canadian-owned businesses operate in Indiana, 41% of which are based in Ontario. Additionally, 28 Indiana-based companies operate in Ontario.
During the trip, Holcomb and a delegation from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. met with Ontario’s minister of energy and visited the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.
The group met with Ontario Power Generation, a major electricity generator in North America to discuss the push toward more clean industrial power generation.
Holcomb’s office says Indiana and Canada saw more than $26.2 billion in goods exchanged in 2022. Since 2017, Canada-based companies have made plans to locate or grow in Indiana with a total $1.75 billion in investment and more than 3,700 job commitments.
